CUH WVB: Chaminade Battles UCSD, but Falls in Three Sets

Toailoa leads with 9 kills

HONOLULU, HI- Facing a nationally-ranked and talented UCSD squad, the Swords gave the Tritons reasons to worry before falling in straight sets 21-25, 17-25 and 24-26.

Many may say a straight set sweep would prove to be a yawner, but with the Swords leading for long stretches of the first and third set, an in-attendance account of the match was quite different.

Chaminade senior middle blocker Malilimago Toailoa (Waikoloa, HI/Kealakehe) provided the Swords with a much-needed presence, contributing 9 kills and 2 total blocks while hitting .238.

The Swords lead or was tied with the Tritons in the first set all the way until UCSD's first lead at 18-19. The same was the case in the third set up until 17-18 when the Tritons got their first lead in what proved to be the final set of the match.

Junior Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) had 5 kills and 14 digs in defeat for Chaminade. Senior setter Kristina Donathan (Honolulu,HI/St. Andrew's Priory) contributed 17 assists and 12 digs.

The Swords dominated the dig battle 65-55. The Swords held UCSD to a hitting percentage of .108. CUH hit .034 on the match.

UCSD was led by Hillary Williamson with 10 kills on a .152 hitting percentage.

The Swords fall to 1-5 with the loss. UCSD improves to 4-0. Chaminade is back in action on September 9th at UH-Hilo in UHH Gym. First serve is set for 7:00 PM HT.
