Box Score HONOLULU, HI- The Silverswords dropped an intense non-conference matchup with Hawaii Pacific this evening (13-25, 25-27, 18-25) in front of a frenetic crowd at McCabe Gym.
HPU led 16-10 midway through the first set when a kill by freshman
Reigna Johnson (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) looked to spark a CUH rally, but it was not to be as HPU took set one, 25-13.
The second set saw the crowd erupt along with the Silverswords play as Chaminade enjoyed an early 8-6 lead. HPU came back, but a
Kim Spring (Bern, Switzerland/ Feusi Bildungszentrum and Feusi Sportschule) kill tied the contest back up at 19-19. A powerful kill by
Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) gave the Swords a 22-21 lead later on in set two and the Silversword fans erupted. HPU responded, setting up a thrilling set point. The final point of the set was a Sea Warrior kill that finished a rally that lasted over sixty seconds as neither team was willing to concede the set. The Sea Warriors took the set 27-25.
Chaminade got out fast in the third set and led 6-1 at the start of the set. HPU rallied back going on a 14-5 run to lead 15-11 and forced Coach Kabalis to call timeout. The Sea Warriors finished off the set to win the match as the final set went to Hawaii Pacific 25-18.
Junior
Crystal Powell (Honolulu HI/Word of Life) led Chaminade with 9 kills. Junior
Matia Spencer (Dayton, NV/ Dayton) added 9 kills in defeat.
Chaminade hit .087 on the match, while HPU hit .218. Sophomore
Brenda Walker (Honolulu, HI/McKinley) led Chaminade with 10 digs.
The Sea Warriors were led by Samantha Rummans with 11 kills.
The Swords drop to 3-4 (0-0 PWC) with the loss. Hawaii Pacific moves to 6-2. Chaminade is back in action Saturday night as the Swords take on #15 BYU-Hawaii in McCabe Gym. First serve is set for 7:00 PM HT.
