Box Score HONOLULU, HI– Chaminade took on the Penguins of Dominican tonight in McCabe Gym in what proved to be a very competitive contest. DUC entered the contest undefeated (3-0) in PacWest play.
Chaminade got out to a quick start and led 13-0 just under three minutes into the game. Dominican slowly responded, but the Silverswords defensive intensity was apparent throughout the first half and limited the Penguins opportunities. A DUC basket at the end of the half gave the Penguins 27 points and Chaminade led by nine, 36-27.
Senior De'Andre Haskins (Long Beach, CA/Jordan) got off to a quick start and led all players with 13 points at the half. Guard
Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/ Will C. Wood) wasn't far behind with 11 points for the Swords. The two had 24 first half points to DUC's 27 as a team.
Following a quick start by Chaminade to start the second half, Dominican rallied and cut the CUH lead to three at 60-57 with seven minutes left in the contest.
Dominique Cooks (Wollongong, Australia/Holy Spirit) squelched the rally with two free throws to extend the lead to five, but the Penguins continued effort setup what proved to be another tight finish in PacWest Conference action.
Leading by just three with just under three minutes to go, CUH's De'Andre Haskins made a key layup to extend the lead to 69-64. Despite some tense moments that followed, Chaminade earned the victory 74-70. Chaminade shot 37% on the night while Dominican shot 46% from the floor.
Sophomore guard
Lee Bailey (Detroit, MI/Detroit Country Day) scored 17 points, while junior forward
Tyree Harrison brought great energy, including offensive multiple rebounds late and contributed 6 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
Dominican was led by Devin Golston with 17 points.
The Swords move to 5-7 on the year and 2-2 in the PacWest with the win. Dominican falls to 7-5 and 3-1 in the PacWest on the year. Chaminade is back in action against Academy of Art in PacWest Conference action on January 9th. Tip is set for 7:30 PM HT in McCabe Gym.
