ST. GEORGE, Utah – The elusive win continues to evade the Chaminade women's soccer team. Playing in their first Mainland game of 2013, the Silverswords again played valiantly, but came up short, falling 4-3 in overtime to Dixie State at Hansen Stadium on Monday.
The loss dropped the Swords to 0-6 on the season and 0-2 in Pacific West Conference action, extending their winless streak to 35. It was the Swords' first multi-goal game since Sept. 17 of last year and the first-ever three-goal game since the inception of the sport in 2007.
The Red Storm (4-3, 4-1 PacWest) opened the scoring on a Kim Thomas goal 20 minutes into the contest. Chaminade countered in the second half when Katelyn Powell's through-ball found Twyla Hamasaki down the field as she put the ball inside the left post, tying the match at 1. It was Hamasaki's second goal of the season.
Dixie State re-captured the lead in the 71st minute on a Jennifer Mason goal. The Red Storm then seemingly put the contest out of reach on another goal at the 83rd minute, making it 3-1.
But the Swords responded with a flurry. With just over two minutes left to play, Hamasaki delivered a pass to Shannon Wright, who found the back of the net for the first time this season, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Then with only 27 seconds left in regulation, Roni Hewett centered a pass from the left corner, where Kristen Fujinaga headed it into the net to send the game into overtime. It was Fujinaga's first goal of the season.
But Megan Marchbanks would play the role of hero for Dixie State, scoring her second goal of the game less than two minutes into overtime.
Chaminade attempted seven shots and a season-tying six shots on goal. Dixie State attempted 37 and seven, respectively.
We are proud of our team," CUH head coach Michelle Richardson said. "They worked hard through the adversity and never gave up. Our team put all we have been working on into play in the second half. Each step we take is a positive one towards future successes."
The Swords will next face Point Loma on Thursday in San Diego, Calif., at 1 p.m. PDT.
