HONOLULU – The Chaminade women's volleyball team got season-highs of 14 kills from Kim Spring and 11 from Cassie Rushlow as the Silverswords defeated Lewis University in four sets, 25-18, 16-25, 25-19, 25-19.
Spring also had a well-rounded match as she also had three total blocks and 11 digs. The win improved the Swords to 3-2 on the season. The Flyers fell to 0-3.
In the first set, a 5-0 CUH run turned a slim lead into a seven-point cushion as the Swords cruised in the first set.
The second would see Lewis return the favor as a 5-0 run of its own would power the Flyers to square the match to make it a best-of-two.
The pivotal third set went back and forth until Lewis took a 19-17 lead. But the Swords got three kills each from Spring and Rushlow as CUH closed the frame on an 8-0 run to take a 2-sets-to-1 lead.
In the fourth, a one-point Sword lead at 14-13 would swell to a 23-15 lead, as Spring and Rushlow put down two kills each as Chaminade won the fourth set comfortably.
CUH got a balanced attack as Kylee Pedro and Ku'ulei Lynch had seven kills each while Kapiolani Rapoza had six. Pedro would tally three total blocks. Brenda Walker would net 19 digs,and Athena Maskarich with 10. Kawai Oleole led the Swords with 17 assists.
Lewis was led by Kim Vertin's match-high 16 kills.
The Swords hit .223 to the Flyers' .172, although Lewis dominated in the blocking category, 11-4.
The Swords will take a break from regular season action next week, as they face their alumane on Friday evening at McCabe Gym. Chaminade's next regular season match will also be its Pacific West Conference opener as the team travels to Laie to face the defending conference champ, BYU-Hawai'i, on Friday, Sept. 20.
