Late Goals Stymie ’Swords Men’s Soccer Again in OT Loss

HONOLULU – Lady Luck has been very unkind to the Chaminade University men's soccer team, especially down the stretch.

For the second time in three days, a pair of late goals snatched victory away from the Silverswords. This time, it was Dixie State University providing heartbreak.

The Red Storm escaped from Saint Louis Field Monday with a 2-1 overtime win on Frank Mallek's chip shot over the head of a charging Chaminade keeper Bernd Buescherhoff just 24 seconds into the extra period, which is the fourth consecutive game the 'Swords have played an overtime session.

On Saturday, California Baptist scored the tying goal with just four minutes left before winning it in OT.

The Red Storm (1-5-1 overall, 1-2 Pacific West Conference) sent the game into overtime as Bryan Baugh's throw in from the right sideline sailed over a wave of players in the box and found Jorge Echevarria, who headed in the ball into the net with only 40 seconds left in regulation.

Chaminade (3-6, 2-3 PacWest) scored the game's first goal in the 76th minute as Lukas Pousset's shot deflected off Red Storm goalkeeper Hayden Matthews and headed towards the right sideline in the area of Dayton Sato, who tapped the ball in unchallenged. It was the senior's first goal of the season.

Buscherhoff and Matthews both recorded three saves, but it was Matthews who got the win to improve to 1-1. Buscherhoff fell to 3-5.

Dixie State outshot Chaminade, 13-10, but the 'Swords held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3. Austin Bush and Jacob Muniz accounted for Chaminade's other shots on goal.

The Silverswords will look to end their three-game losing streak when they host No. 20 Azusa Pacific, the preseason favorite to win the PacWest. Kickoff is slated for 10 a.m.
