Men’s Soccer Defeats Dominican in Double OT, 1-0

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Just six games into the regular season, the Chaminade University men's soccer team is continuing to make history.

The Silverswords improved to 2-0 in the Pacific West Conference for the first time in school history after outlasting Dominican University of California, 1-0 in double overtime, Thursday at Kennelly Field.

Junior forward Nicolas Ferro netted the game-winner for Chaminade (3-3) in the fifth minute of the second OT after a Penguins foul just outside the box. On the ensuing free kick, Ferro curled the ball past both the defensive wall and diving DUC goalkeeper Erik Anderson for his first goal of the season.

Chaminade's two–game winning streak is also the first for the program since September 2007. Dominican fell to 0-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the PacWest.

'Swords keeper Bernd Buescherhoff (3-2) made six saves to earn his second shutout of the season. Anderson made three saves and fell to 0-5-1.

"Once again, I'm very proud of our effort and fighting spirit," Silverswords head coach Zach Kingsley said. "This was our third game in under a week and they hadn't played a game in two.

"Again, we came in with the right mentality and executed our game plan. All the boys worked for each other and it was a team effort. This has made the difference for us and will continue to do so."

Colton Gallt, Dayton Sato and Lukas Pousset each had shots on goal for Chaminade.

The evenly-played match saw the 'Swords take 12 shots to the Penguins' 10 while corner kicks were deadlocked at six. But Dominican was whistled for 22 fouls to the Chaminade's 10.

"We'll enjoy this win tonight and turn our focus to Fresno Pacific tomorrow," Kingsley said.

Saturday's game against the Sunbirds will provide yet another test for the surprising Silverswords, picked to finish last in the PacWest Coaches' Preseason Poll. Fresno Pacific was picked to finish second in the poll.
