SAN DIEGO – The Chaminade University women's soccer team was looking to score a major upset over Pacific West Conference power Point Loma.
But the Silverswords couldn't muster enough offense and the Sea Lions tacked on a pair of goals in a two-minute span late in the game to escape with a 2-0 win Monday at the PLNU Soccer/Track Complex.
Chaminade, wrapping up its first Mainland road trip of the year, fell to 1-9 on the year and 0-6 in the PacWest. Point Loma, received votes in the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll released earlier in the day, improved to 8-3 on the year and 5-1 in the conference, moving into a three-way tie atop the standings with Concordia and California Baptist.
Keagan Bolibol assisted on both goals for PLNU, the defending PacWest champion and the preseason favorite to repeat, the first on a crossing pass from the left sideline to Easton Kawawaki who tapped in the ball right in front of the goal in the 78
th minute.
Two minutes later, in a near-replay of the first goal, Bolibol dribbled down the left sideline then made another crossing pass to the front of the net, this time to Bella Diaz who got the goal.
Lauren Ishii made eight saves for the Silverswords, including several diving stops to prevent the Sea Lions from getting on the scoreboard earlier in the contest. Ariel Oriate got the win for PLNU.
Twyla Hamasaki took Chaminade's only shot of the game.
The Silverswords return home to face intercity rival Hawai'i Pacific at Saint Louis Field on Saturday. The match will be their first in the year-long PacWest Hawai'i Challenge.
