Women’s Soccer Blanked by Sharks

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team's opportunity to end a long drought against its intercity rivals will have to wait one more year.

Hawai'i Pacific University's scored an early goal then added two more in the second half to blank the Silverswords 3-0 in a Pacific West Conference match Saturday at Saint Louis Field.

Meghan Cooley got the Sharks (5-7 overall, 2-5 PacWest) on the board less than three minutes in the game, receiving a through-ball from Sara Romo for the game's first goal.

Despite an injury-riddled roster, the Silverswords (1-10, 0-7) defense held tough as goalkeeper Lauren Ishii made several outstanding saves, shutting out HPU for the next 66 minutes.

The Sharks, however, found pay dirt again as Romo was the recipient in the 68th minute taking a feed from Breanna Gaddis and firing from 25 yards out to put them up 2-0. Larkyn Nelson added a third goal six minutes later to finish the scoring.

Twyla Hamasaki attempted two shots for Chaminade, which hasn't beaten HPU since 2008. Caitlin Tatemichi and Mary-Lynn Johannes each attempted one. Ishii made 11 saves, tying her season-high.

HPU keeper Kelby Boswell earned the win to improve to 3-4.

The Silverswords will face Holy Names Monday at Saint Louis Field with kickoff slated for 10 a.m.
