Holy Names Downs Silverswords

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team returned to action Monday but suffered a 3-1 setback to Holy Names University Monday at Saint Louis Field.

The Silverswords fell to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in the Pacific West Conference, falling to the Hawks (4-7, 2-5 PacWest) for the first time in three matches.

The 'Swords did snap a 10-match scoreless streak when Lauren Uehara found the back of the net, heading in a Mary-Lynn Johannes cross in the 84th minute. It was Chaminade's first goal since its season opener against Wheeling Jesuit on Sept. 3 – also scored by Uehara – a span of 1,007:34 between goals.

Harlie Valentine netted HNU's first two goals and a 2-0 lead for the visitors. After Uehara's goal turned it into a one-goal game, the 'Swords went in full attack mode in an attempt to tie the game but Allie Sementelli iced it with a goal with 3:28 remaining in the contest.

The Silverswords had ample opportunities early on to get on the scoreboard first. Twyla Hamasaki fired a shot from the left angle at the 12:25 mark but the ball clanked off the crossbar. Bianca Gonzales gathered in the rebound and fired a shot at the net but reigning PacWest Defender of the Week Tiana Miyashiro was there for the save.

With the Hawks up 1-0, Johannes had two chances to tie it in the 28th and 29th minutes with near-breakaways. But in both instances and with defenders rapidly closing in from behind, the sophomore from Kihei, Maui couldn't capitalize.

The 'Swords also had scoring opportunities in the second half as Hamasaki, Uehara, Johannes, Megan Mararagan and Maricruz Enriquez each attempted shots during the frame.

The scoring chances did result in the Silverswords highest shot total of the season with 15 attempts, seven on goal.

Lauren Ishii made five saves in defeat for the 'Swords while Miyashiro made four. Hawks reserve keeper Jenni Dooley who replaced Miyashiro had two saves while allowing the Chaminade goal.

The Silverswords return to action Saturday as they face Dominican University of California at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
