HONOLULU – It was a record-setting day for the Chaminade University men's soccer team.
Senior midfielder
Lukas Pousset tallied the program's first-ever hat-trick and assisted on another as the Silverswords attack finally broke through in a 5-1 win over Holy Names University Monday at Saint Louis Field.
The five goals is the most-ever in a Pacific West Conference match for Chaminade (1-10 overall, 1-7 PacWest), giving interim head coach
Danny O'Regan his first collegiate win. The previous high was four against Academy of Art on October 12, 2009.
Holy Names fell to 2-9-1 and 1-5-1 in the conference.
Pousset's seven points is also a single-game record for the program, which is currently in its 10
th year of existence.
The Silverswords struck first when Pousset's corner kick was headed in by
Guilherme Aires just under four minutes in the contest. The goal was Aires second of the year and Pousset's second assist of the season.
Approximately 16 minutes later, a Hawks' foul inside their own box resulted in Pousset converting a penalty kick to put the Silverswords up 2-0 as the score stood at halftime.
In the 58
th minute,
Tyler Braunthal made a crossing pass which was deflected by HNU goalkeeper Kevin Gonzalez. The carom went straight to Pousset who fired the ball into the net, giving Chaminade a 3-0 lead with Braunthal getting his first assist of the year.
Chaminade struck again in the 64
th minute as
James Meaney's pass found
Cameron Heen who headed the ball into the net, putting the Silverswords up 4-0. It was Heen's second career goal and his first since September 2013. Meaney also picked up his first assist of the season.
Pousset then made team history three minutes later when he converted his second penalty kick of the game to give him his third goal and a 5-0 'Swords lead. Pousset now has a team-leading four goals and 10 points on the year.
The Hawks managed to get on the board in the 78
th minute on Antonio Chavarria's first goal of the year.
Chaminade took 13 shots, nine of which were on-goal, both season-highs. Holy Names took 15 shots, seven on goal.
Bernd Buescherhoff made six saves on the day in picking up his first win of the season to improve to 1-4. Gonzalez made four saves in taking the loss to drop to 2-9-1.
The Silverswords are back on the pitch Saturday when they host Dominican University of California at 2 p.m. The game also marks the return of Penguins head coach Zach Kingsley, who last year guided the Silverswords to their best record in program history.
