LAIE, O'ahu, Hawai'i – A cold-shooting contest resulted in the Chaminade University women's basketball team dropping their third straight contest of the 2015-16 season.
The Silverswords shot just under 27 percent from the field as they fell to 0-3 on the year in an 88-55 loss to the University of Mary in the final day of the O'ahu Thanksgiving Classic at the Cannon Activities Center.
Chaminade attempted a program-record 78 shots but only made 25 of them as they were also out-rebounded 59-39.
Courtney Kaupu recorded her second straight 13-point contest to lead the 'Swords while
Kristle Henry and
Lilia Maio added 10 each. Henry also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals while Maio grabbed a team-high eight boards.
The Marauders (5-2) were led by Britney Dietz who poured in 30 points while Rachel Weir came off the bench with a career-high 22 points. Hannah Larson had a double-double for Mary with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Chantal Yadao hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring but a 12-2 U-Mary run gave them a seven-point lead before the 'Swords battled back as
Carissa McBride scored four of her eight points on back-to-back baskets bringing them to within two as Chaminade trailed 24-19 at the end of the first quarter.
Henry's jumper followed by Kaupu's 3-ball and
Taylor Babbitt's layup were a part of a 7-0 Chaminade run to open the second quarter that gave them a 26-24 lead. But an 11-2 Marauders run at the end of the quarter helped to propel them to a 42-32 halftime lead.
Mary's momentum seemed to carry over to the second half as a 10-0 run built their lead to 56-37 as the 'Swords were not able to recover.
The Silverswords were only 9-of-36 (26.9 percent) in the second half and were only 4-of-40 from beyond 3-point range. U-Mary went to the free throw line 33 times with 25 makes while CUH was only 9-of-14.
However the 'Swords had 13 assists to 10 turnovers and forced the Marauders into 15 giveaways.
The Silverswords will open Pacific West Conference action Thursday at McCabe Gym against Concordia. Live streaming audio will be available at GoSwords.com.
