’Swords Set Records in Rout of Holy Names

HONOLULU – It was a record setting afternoon of hoops for the Chaminade University women's basketball team.

Despite being officially eliminated from the Pacific West Conference Tournament chase the night before, the Silverswords came out with a sense of purpose, breaking or tying seven team and individual records in a 91-52 rout of Holy Names Saturday at McCabe Gym.

The most important record set by the 'Swords was improving to 7-15 overall and 7-11 in the PacWest, breaking the program mark for single-season wins set during the 2006-07 season, the inaugural year of women's basketball at Chaminade. The 39-point margin of victory was also the largest in program history.

Sophomore forward Lilia Maio led Chaminade with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor while senior guard Katie Buskey contributed with 20, hitting 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Senior guard Glacen Florita had 15 points, hitting 6-of-9 from the floor including three triples. And sophomore guard Kristle Henry tied the single game record with six steals. Henry also had eight points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Ten of 11 Silverswords who played had at least one field goal as they swept the season series against the Hawks.

Holy Names (2-23, 1-16) was led by Garysha Youngblood with 14 points and nine boards.

Among the team records set Saturday, the 'Swords amassed 30 assists – which obliterated the previous record of 19 – and 35 field goals made, which broke the previous mark of 31, both of which were set on March 1, 2012 at BYU-Hawai'i. Shana Kawakami dropped nine dimes, one shy of the program-record of 10 set by Samantha Saito in Feb. 2007. Kawakami also accounted for seven points, six rebounds and five steals.

The 'Swords also set team records for point in a first half (50) and tied another by hitting 12 3-pointers.

Holy Names scored the game's opening basket and held the lead for a total of 21 seconds. Florita's 3-ball gave the 'Swords the lead for good two possessions later. A 12-2 Chaminade run pushed its advantage to 19-8 with Maio scoring seven points during that span. After the Hawks brought the score to within eight at 22-14, the Silverswords slammed the door shut, outscoring Holy Names 28-8 in the final 10 minutes of the first half for a 50-22 lead at intermission.

The 'Swords continued to execute in the second half, leading by as many as 41 in the waning minutes.

Chaminade shot 53 percent from the floor, its third-highest ever. They also limited the Hawks to just 28.1 field goal shooting (16-for-57), third-lowest by an opponent while the 52 points by Holy Names is tied for the second-lowest surrendered. The 12 turnovers committed by the Silverswords are also the second-lowest in team history. And although the 91 points is second-most in team history, it is the most by the 'Swords in a non-overtime game.

Meanwhile, Florita inched closer to the program's career 3-pointers record, leaving her two shy of the mark set by Marian Murphy, who hit 94 from 2006-08. Maio also passed Saito for second all-time in career rebounds, giving the Kamehameha-Kapalama alumnus 301 in her career, 41 behind current teammate Kennedi Akana, who sat out the game due to injury.

The Silverswords return to McCabe Gym Thursday when they face Dominican with live audio available on GoSwords.com.
