Second Half Explosion Dooms ’Swords

KANEOHE, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's soccer team ran into a buzz saw against Hawai'i Pacific Saturday.

The Sharks scored four times in a span of 15 minutes in the second half as HPU defeated the Silverswords 6-1 in a non-conference game played at Atherton Field.

Chaminade fell to 0-3 on the season while the Sharks evened their record at 2-2.

After trailing 2-0 at halftime, Silverswords midfielder Nicolas Ferro received a pass from Cameron Heen and put the shot in the back of the net at the 59-minute mark to pull Chaminade to within a goal, giving them new hope. It was Ferro's first goal of the season.

But HPU answered just over four minutes later on an Erik Keemsies free kick from 18 yards out toward the right sideline giving it a two-goal cushion again. The Sharks then exploded for three more goals over the next eight minutes to keep Chaminade winless on the year.

Ferro attempted three shots for the 'Swords, two of them on goal. Ryan Arkelian was the only other Silversword to attempt any shots.

Rene Mejia made three saves but took the loss for the 'Swords while Bernd Buescherhoff started the second half and tallied five saves. Jesse Kunitomo notched the win for HPU.

Chaminade opens Pacific West Conference action next Saturday when they host Fresno Pacific at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
