’Swords Tie Azusa Pacific on Senior Day

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team ended their 2016 home slate with a 1-1 tie against Azusa Pacific Saturday amid rainy conditions at Saint Louis Field.

The draw gave the Silverswords their 16th point of the season, pushing them past BYU-Hawai'i into eighth in the Pacific West Conference standings. Chaminade is 5-7-1 on the season and 5-5-1 in the PacWest.

The Silverswords took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Avinash Singh shot a ball towards the left corner. Jaewon Huh then made a touch pass to Yoshinori Tamukai who in turn fired a shot to the back of the net. The goal was Tamukai's second of the season while the double-assist was the first of the year for both Singh and Huh.

The 'Swords managed to keep APU (6-6-4, 6-4-2 PacWest) at bay but with 45 seconds remaining, a Chaminade foul resulted in a free kick for Kaleb Armbrust 40 yards away from the goal. Armbrust, who had two set piece goals this season, made it three as his kick snuck over the out-stretched arms of 'Swords keeper Bernd Buescherhoff to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, the 'Swords had a chance to walk off as happy campers but Huh's 25-yard blast from the right angle banged off the right post, resulting in a second overtime.

Neither squad was able to get off a quality look at the nets in the game's second 10-minute stanza.

Chaminade took 12 shots including three on goal. Curtis Coburn and Singh, along with Tamukai's score, both had a SOG. Huh and Micah Mokulehua each attempted three shots.

Both Buescherhoff and his Azusa Pacific counterpart, Tyler Jaramillo, made two saves.

The game was also the final on the Saint Louis Field pitch for seniors Guilherme Aires, Edward Cordasco III and Mitchell Fasolo.

The Silverswords will conclude the season in the Bay Area next week as they face Dominican on Thursday then wrap up the season next Saturday at Notre Dame de Namur.
