HONOLULU – Back in August, the Chaminade University women's volleyball team opened their season by defeating nationally-ranked Alaska Anchorage.
Eleven weeks later, the men's basketball team followed suit, defeating the 12
th-ranked Seawolves, 92-81, in their season opener at the PacWest/GNAC Challenge Friday at Moanalua High School Gym.
Rohndell Goodwin poured in a team- and career-high 29 points while
Dantley Walker also set a career-high with 19 points with
Kiran Shastri also adding 19.
Alaska Anchorage (0-1), ranked as high as No. 3 in the Sporting News and Bulletin Division II Preseason Polls, got 33 points from the Great Northwest Athletic Association Preseason Player of the Year, Sekou Wiggs.
All of Walker's field goals came from 3-point range, hitting 6-of-11 attempts. Shastri went 5-for-8 from the floor including 4-for-7 from downtown.
Austin Pope added 10 for Chaminade (1-0), which avenged a loss to UAA in Fairbanks, Alaska last season.
Despite being out-rebounded 40-26, the 'Swords countered with a 54.2 field goal percentage (32-of-59) and made 13 triples. The Seawolves were held to 43.4 percent from the floor and were only 7-of-21 from 3-point range.
