’Swords Down Nanooks, Improves to 2-0

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's basketball team concluded the PacWest/GNAC Challenge with an 80-66 win over the University of Alaska Saturday at Moanalua High School Gym.
 
Kiran Shastri hit for 22 points to lead the Silverswords who improved to 2-0 on the season. Rohndell Goodwin added 19 points while for the second straight night. Dantley Walker provided a spark off the bench for 15 points.
 
Shastri and Goodwin each made nine field goals while Walker hit five 3-pointers. Goodwin also dished out five assists as did Sam Daly.
 
Kuany Kuany and Austin Pope each pulled down 10 rebounds with Kuany scoring nine points.
 
The Nanooks (0-2) were led by Brandon Davis' 17 points.
 
The 'Swords had an 11-0 run to start the game before UAF rallied back, going on an 18-2 run to take an 18-13 lead. Chaminade battled back, taking a 24-22 lead on Pope's layup before the Nanooks managed to knot the score twice in the waning minutes of the first half and trailed 40-37 at the break.
 
Alaska managed to hang around in the second half and whittled the deficit to 64-61 with 7:15 remaining but Walker and Shastri buried back-to-back 3s and Goodwin's layup helped build the lead to 10 with 3:29 left to help put the game away.
 
The 'Swords held the Nanooks to 40.3 percent shooting from the floor and out-rebounded them 43-33. They also hit 11 triples while 19 of their 33 baskets were assisted.
 
Hawai'i schools were a perfect 4-0 in the Honolulu quadrant of the Challenge with Hawai'i Pacific University completing the sweep by downing Alaska Anchorage in Saturday's nightcap contest.
 
The Silverswords will next be in action on Monday, Nov. 21 when they face last year's Division I national runners-up North Carolina in the opener of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
