LAHAINA, Maui, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's basketball team opened the Maui Jim Invitational with a 104-61 loss to No. 4 North Carolina Monday at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Rohndell Goodwin led the Silverswords (2-1) with 18 points while
Kiran Shastri had 13.
Austin Pope added 12 points while
Kuany Kuany had 10.
The Tar Heels (5-0) got 22 points from Isaiah Hicks and 20 from Kennedy Meeks who also pulled down 10 rebounds.
North Carolina came out of the blocks by hitting their first four shots but the 'Swords rallied back on 3-pointers from Goodwin and Kuany who also had a driving layup, cutting the deficit to 9-8.
Chaminade trailed by as many as nine in the first half but a
Nate Pollard flush, two Goodwin baskets and a triple from Shastri narrowed gap to 28-24 with 8:48 remaining in the frame. UNC then used a 22-10 run to grab a 50-34 halftime lead.
But North Carolina went on a 27-13 run to start the second half to pull away.
The 'Swords were out-rebounded 52-23 and held to 36 percent shooting.
The Silverswords will face UConn in a consolation game Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
