LAHAINA, Maui, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's basketball team fell to Connecticut, 93-82, in a consolation game at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational Tuesday at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Five Silverswords cracked the double-digit mark, led by
Rohndell Goodwin's 20 points.
Kiran Shastri hit five 3-pointers for 19 points while
Sam Daly also had 19, a season-high.
Kuany Kuany had 11 points and seven rebounds for Chaminade (2-2) while
Austin Pope added 10 points.
Pope and Goodwin pulled down six boards each while Daly dished out five assists. Pope also had a pair of blocks.
Jalen Adams had 25 points and 11 assists, finishing one assist shy of a triple-double for the Huskies (2-3).
The 'Swords grabbed an early lead on the 2015 national champions, holding an 18-13 lead six minutes into the game but UConn outscored Chaminade, 22-11, over the next eight minutes to go up by six.
UConn appeared to be pulling away, taking a 39-32 lead with 4:34 left in the half but Daly buried a triple from the left corner, followed by Pope's layup which cut into the deficit. Pope then stole the ensuing inbounds pass leading to Goodwin's foul line jumper to tie it at 39.
The Huskies then went up 43-39 with under two minutes left but Goodwin and Pope knocked down 3s to square the contest at 45 at the break.
The opening minutes of the second half went back-and-forth with two ties and four lead changes. Rodney Purvis' jumper gave UConn the lead for good at 57-56 with 15:51 left and would extend it to as many as eight with six minutes left.
The 'Swords made one final push as Shastri scored seven in row on a triple and four free throws to help narrow the deficit to 80-76. But Purvis hit two late 3-pointers to seal the game for UConn.
After hitting 50 percent of their shots including 9-of-17 from downtown, the 'Swords were held to nearly 42 percent shooting from the floor and made only 5-of-15 from beyond the arc in the second half. However, they took care of the ball, committing only eight turnovers.
The Silverswords will wrap up the Maui Jim Maui Invitational Wednesday in the seventh-place game against Tennessee on ESPNU at 9 a.m.
