Women’s Volleyball Falls in Season Finale

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team ended the 2016 season with a 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 13-15 defeat to Hawai'i Pacific University Friday at James Castle Gym on the St. Andrew's Priory campus.

Daisia LaBrie had a team-high 17 kills for the Silverswords who ended the season 16-13 overall and 10-10 in the Pacific West Conference. Kira Long added 13 kills and a season-high five digs.

Cassie Rushlow put down 11 kills and had a team-leading six blocks in her final match in the royal blue and white. Also playing in her final match for Chaminade was Kim Spring who had six kills and 11 digs. Emma Tecklenburg also put down six attacks.

Pomai Recca concluded Sharks career with 24 kills and 16 digs as HPU, despite dropping a five-set match in Laie to BYU-Hawai'i earlier in the day, ended its season at 17-12 and 13-7 in the PacWest.

Also playing their final matches as 'Swords were Ku`ulei Lynch (2 kills, 3 total blocks), Waihilo Chartrand (15 digs, 2 aces) and Kasse-Ann Kiriu-Dela Cruz (12 digs).

Natashya Enos racked up her 11th double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs for Chaminade while Skyler Curry added 18 helpers. Terezie Cernosek picked up four total blocks.

Spring finished her career with 1,104 kills, the fourth-most in school history while Rushlow ended hers by moving past Joan Lilio into seventh in the all-time kills list with 852. She also finished with 227 total blocks, passing Boo Arnold into third place.

The 'Swords dropped the first two sets before rallying to win the next two, forcing a winner-take-all fifth. Spurred by the home crowd on their Senior Night, the Sharks opened up a three-point lead in the fifth and never looked back.

HPU's win also created a logjam in the race for the four first-place points in the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge volleyball standings with Hawai'i Hilo, Chaminade and HPU each having six points with only Saturday's BYUH at UH Hilo match remaining. A UH Hilo win would give them eight total points in the volleyball competition and the four first-place points towards the overall standings. However, a Seasiders win in the program's final match, would mean all four Hawai'i schools would have six points and all would receive the first-place points.
