’Swords Swept in Day 2 of TOC

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Chaminade University softball team dropped a pair of games in Saturday's second day of the Tournament of Champions sponsored by City of Turlock.

The Silverswords fell to No. 25 Chico State, 7-1, in their first game of the day then lost to Sonoma State in the nightcap, 8-2.

Chaminade fell to 9-27 on the year and 1-3 in the TOC.

Game 1 vs. No. 25 Chico State
After two scoreless innings, the Wildcats (23-10) exploded for five runs in the third inning off Chaminade starter Luana Moreno.

Kayla Higuchi relived Moreno in the fourth and allowed two runs, both unearned.

The 'Swords finally got a run in the seventh on Jenn Betian's sacrifice fly which scored pinch hitter Brianna Georgia.

Chaminade was held to only two hits in the game. Chico State's Brooke Langeloh struck out 11 to improve her record to 13-1.

Game 2 vs. Sonoma State
Betian led off the game with a single to right and one out later, Rainelle Matsuoka hit a booming double to gap in right center, allowing Betian to scamper home to give them a 1-0 lead.

But it proved to be short-lived as Sonoma State (21-13) doubled three times in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs in the frame. The Seawolves struck for three more runs in the second, chasing starter Chelsea Camello from the circle.

Chaminade got a run back in the third on Kiana Ulufale's base hit to left which scored Betian, cutting the deficit to 7-2.

Meanwhile, Amber Manuel pitched admirably in relief, allowing only one run in 4 2/3 innings.

Camello took the loss to fall to 3-13 on the year.

Gabby Dupree got the win in relief, throwing the final four innings without allowing a run for her first decision of the year, improving to 1-0.

The Silverswords wrap up the TOC and their road trip Sunday when they face Western Oregon and Stanislaus State at the Pedretti Sports Complex. Both games will have live streaming audio on GoSwords.com.
