SAN FRANCISCO – It'll be a good flight back home for the Chaminade University men's soccer team.
Curtis Coburn's goal in the 55
th minute gave the Silverswords a 1-0 win over Academy of Art at Beach Chalet Soccer Field Monday. The victory improved the 'Swords to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the Pacific West Conference and gave them back-to-back wins on the Mainland for the first time in two years. It also snapped a six-game losing streak to the Urban Knights.
Coburn, the freshman from Huntington Beach, California, headed in the game-winner on a corner kick from
Tyler Braunthal. It was Coburn's third goal in two matches and his team-leading sixth point of the season. All three of his attempts this season have found the back of the net.
"Curtis has really stepped up and become a game-changer in the last few games with his defensive play and beautiful game-winning goals," Silverswords head coach
Jayson Abe said.
Goalkeeper
Bernd Buescherhoff made two saves for his sixth career victory and also put his name in the record books, becoming Chaminade's all-time wins leader. The junior also recorded his second consecutive shutout for the first time in his career.
ART U's Kevin Mendez took the loss on two saves as the Urban Knights fell to 1-6-1 and 0-2.
Chaminade attempted eight shots with
Guilherme Aires taking two with one shot on goal while
Jaewon Huh had the team's other SOG. All five 'Sword corner kicks came in the second half. Academy of Art attempted 11 shots and six corners.
"Our guys did a great job of coming together on this road trip," Abe said. "They are making strides and improving daily."
The Silverswords return home and will make their home debut Saturday against BYU-Hawai'i at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and will be the 22
nd and final meeting between the two O'ahu rivals. BYUH, which is dropping intercollegiate athletics after this season, leads the overall series 25-2-1 and 15-1-1 in PacWest contests.
