IRVINE, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's basketball team opened their southern California road trip with a 70-59 loss to Concordia University Irvine Saturday at the CU Arena.
Kristle Henry had a season-high 19 points in defeat for the Silverswords, who fell to 3-15 overall and 3-11 in the Pacific West Conference. Henry also had six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Morgan Bryant led the Eagles (8-10, 6-6 PacWest) with 12 points.
Freshman
Destiny Castro contributed to the Chaminade cause with her second consecutive double-double (11 points, 10 boards) while
Kali Benavente tied her season-high with 10 points.
Courtney Kaupu and
Lilia Maio hauled in six rebounds each with Maio chipping in with seven points.
Henry's steals total gave her 162 in her career, drawing her closer to Samantha Saito's program-record of 166.
The 'Swords trailed by as many as nine in the first half but consecutive buckets by Castro, Henry and
Carissa Webb cut the deficit to 31-28 with 2:51 left in the second quarter before CUI extended its lead to 41-33 at halftime.
The Eagles grabbed their largest lead of 13 early in the third quarter but two layups from Benavente and one from Maio cut the deficit to 49-42 at the midway point of the frame but it was as close as the 'Swords got.
Chaminade shot 30.8 percent from the floor while CUI hit at a 46.7 percent clip and were out-rebounded, 52-39. However, the 'Swords forced 19 Concordia turnovers while committing only nine themselves, the second-lowest in team history.
The Silverswords continue their road trip Monday at Azusa Pacific.
