’Swords, Penguins Duel to 1-1 Draw

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University and Dominican University of California men's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 draw Monday amid a steady rain at Saint Louis Field.

The tie left the Silverswords with a 3-7-2 overall record and 2-6-2 in the Pacific West Conference.

The Penguins (4-8-1, 1-7-1 PacWest) opened the scoring on a goal by Wilson Briggs in the 61st minute.

The 'Swords countered in the 75th minute when Makoto Shoji (Okinawa, Japan/Rio Hondo College) powered in the tying goal off an assist from Jaewon Huh (Aiea, Hawai'i/Aiea). It was Shoji's second goal of the season and Huh's first assist.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net the remainder of regulation, resulting in the match going into overtime.

The Penguins managed two shots in the OT period but couldn't find the net. The 'Swords were then assessed a red card seconds after the first overtime ended, resulting in them playing with a man down.

But Chaminade managed to hold their ground in the second overtime. A red card against Briggs with less than a minute left in the match resulted in a 10-on-10 even playing field.

Shoji and Huh took three shots each for the 'Swords while Ruben Taks (Vught, The Netherlands/UNC Pembroke) took two.

The contest was chippy with six combined yellow cards and two reds.

Bernd Buescherhoff (Steinfeld, Germany/Gymnasium Lohne) recorded two saves while his DUC counterpart, Christian Lathrop, made five.

The match-up featured the two winningest coaches in Chaminade men's soccer history (Jayson Abe with eight; DUC coach Zach Kingsley with six, all in 2014). Three members of the current 'Swords roster played for Kingsley (who left to take the Dominican job just three weeks before the 2015 season-opener) in '14 – Buescherhoff, Huh and Avinash Singh (Pukalani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui).

The draw marked the first time in two years that Dominican did not get the game-winner in the waning minutes of regulation. Two years ago, DUC won with less than two minutes remaining and, last year, achieved victory with less three minutes left.

The Silverswords return to the Saint Louis Field pitch Saturday against Hawai'i Pacific University at 2:30 p.m.
