Silverswords, Cougars Battle to Draw Again

AZUSA, Calif. – For the second straight season, there was no resolution between the Chaminade University and Azusa Pacific University men's soccer teams.

The teams battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw Saturday at the Cougar Soccer Complex. It was the same score in last year's meeting at Saint Louis Field in Honolulu.

The tie left both the Silverswords and Cougars with 0-1-1 marks in the Pacific West Conference. Chaminade is 1-2-1 overall while the Cougars are 0-5-1.

Tyler Braunthal (Pearl City, Hawai'i/Mililani) accounted for the 'Swords goal, a 30-foot blast in the 15th minute which put them ahead, 1-0. It was the program's all-time assists leader's first goal since October 2015.

But APU countered on a penalty kick by Kaleb Armbrust in the 53rd minute. Ironically it was Armbrust who had the game-tying goal in last year's contest.

The 'Swords nearly retook the lead three minutes later but a header by Avinash Singh (Pukalani, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) ricocheted off the APU post.

Both teams also had opportunities in both extra sessions with potential breakaways and through balls but CUH was whistled for being offsides twice and APU once in the second OT.

Nick Kraus (Torrance, Calif./South) took three shots for the 'Swords, all on-goal.

Bernd Buescherhoff (Steinfeld, Germany/Gymnasium Lohne) made one save for Chaminade with his counterpart, Brendan Fix, making five stops.

The Silverswords return to the Saint Louis Field pitch on Thursday when they face Holy Names at 12:30 p.m.
