MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team took a pair of matches Friday at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.
The Silverswords won their third match in as many chances at the Showcase, defeating host Western Oregon, 18-25, 25-18, 27-25, 26-24. Chaminade then ran its overall record to 5-2 with a 16-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-19 victory over Cal State San Marcos in the evening session.
Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) totaled 30 kills and 26 digs, recording double-doubles in both matches, giving her four straight double-double matches.
Kira Long (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) added 28 combined kills while
Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) had 22 kills.
Match 1 vs. Western Oregon
Four players were in double-figure kills led by Tecklenburg's 15. Long added 14 while
Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College) had 11 and Reedy 10. Tecklenburg also had 10 digs.
Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) also had a double-double with 38 assists and 14 digs.
Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) had 14 digs with
Nina Torio (Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani) contributing with a career-high 11.
Terezie Cernosek (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) had four blocks and added seven kills.
In the pivotal third set, the 'Swords, despite losing a late four-point lead, staved off four set points with Bell putting down two kills and a WOU attacking error to give them the 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, the Wolves led 23-22 but Chaminade ended the match by scoring four of the last five points. Long and Reedy combined for three kills during the run while Wiley and Cernosek teamed for a double-block.
Chaminade hit .234 for the match while holding WOU (3-2) to .197.
Match 2 vs. Cal State San Marcos
In the nightcap, Tecklenburg and Long duplicated their kill totals from the Western Oregon match while Reedy powered down a season-high 12 while hitting .417 against the Cougars (3-4). Tecklenburg added a season-best 16 digs, one shy of her career high set last season.
Cernosek accounted for five total blocks (three solo, two assisted) while
Alexis Hamilton (Miami, Fla./Valley Christian) had four blocks (one solo, three assisted). Long also had three blocks, all assisted, as Chaminade amassed 10 total team blocks to CSUSM's two.
Wiley and
Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) combined for 41 assists with Zanon making 17 digs and Torio 10.
The Silverswords were also effective at the service line with a season-best 10 aces with Curry, Zanon and Torio each getting three.
After dropping the first set, Chaminade took big early leads in Sets 2 and 3 to go up 2-1. But CSUSM stepped up its game in the fourth, battling the Silverswords to a 19-all draw late in the set. However, Tecklenburg accounted for 2 1/2 points with two kills and a block assist while the 'Swords' defense forced two Cougar hitting errors to set up aloha ball. Curry then served her final ace to give Chaminade its fourth consecutive win.
The Silverswords hit .236 while holding the Cougars to a .128 clip. They piled up 72 points to the Cougars' 47.
The 'Swords will look to depart the Showcase unblemished when they face Cal State East Bay on Saturday in their final match of the tournament.
