SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – In their first Mainland road trip of the season, the Chaminade University women's basketball dropped an 86-61 decision to Dominican University of California in the trip's opening game Saturday at the Conlan Center.
Diamond Carter (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Olympic College) hit four 3-pointers on-route to a team-high 16 points while
Destiny Castro (Talofolo, Guam/Notre Dame HS) collected her third double-double of the season with a 13-point, 10-rebound effort for the Silverswords who fell to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in the Pacific West Conference.
Natalie Diaz had 28 points and 15 rebounds for the Penguins (11-5, 5-3 PacWest) who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Alicia Dugan (Renton, Wash./Peninsula College) added a season-best 12 points for Chaminade while
Kali Benavente (Tamuning, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) had 10 points and four assists.
Jakarra Waddell (Burbank, Calif./Long Beach City College) pulled down a career-high five rebounds.
The 'Swords were outscored, 29-11, in the fourth quarter after managing to keep pace through the first 30 minutes. Chaminade trailed by just seven (57-50) at the end of the third quarter courtesy of two Dugan buckets.
But the Penguins opened the final quarter on an 11-0 run to help them pull away.
Chaminade was held to 35.3 percent shooting, gathered 33 rebounds and had nine assists. Conversely, Dominican shot nearly 51 percent from the floor, pulled down 47 rebounds and had 26 assists.
The 'Swords will be in San Francisco on Monday to face Academy of Art.
