Silverswords Foiled Again in Overtime

HONOLULU – Overtime has not been kind to the Chaminade University women's soccer team this season. And it reared its ugly head again on Saturday.

For the second straight game, the Silverswords came away on the short end in extra time, falling to Biola, 2-1, at Saint Louis Field.

Madi deMetropolis tallied in the game-winner in the 97th minute to deny the Silverswords of their first Pacific West Conference win of the season.

The loss dropped the 'Swords to 1-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the PacWest. Saturday's contest was the Silverswords' record fourth overtime game this year where they are 0-3-1 in extra sessions.

Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i-Manoa/Pearl City) accounted for Chaminade's lone goal coming at the 58th minute.

Down 1-0, Fontes took a ball away from a Biola player at midfield then sped down the right sideline with several Eagle defenders giving chase. The University of Hawai'i transfer was then locked in a one-on-one situation with Biola keeper Alyssa Joel but Fontes won the battle, rifling the shot past her into the lower left corner to square the game.

Chaminade had several chances at the winner towards the end of regulation. A Jordan Taboniar (Anahola, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) header and kick from Cierra Toledo-Muragin (Hilo, Hawai'i/Waiakea) were on target but Joel was there to make the saves. Fontes also had potential opportunity on another breakaway but Joel was able to snare the ball just milliseconds before Fontes could make the extra tap.

Biola also had a chance before time expired but Sandy Hawryla's shot was stopped by Brandee Lane (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) with just two seconds left.

In overtime, Taboniar had another header opportunity but Joel was again there for the save. The Eagles' Hali Oaks then got a through-ball into the Chaminade backfield where deMetropolis' breakaway shot ended the match.

The 'Swords attempted 13 shots on the afternoon with seven on-goal with Biola taking 15 total cracks at the net. Fontes had four with her goal being her team-leading fourth this season. Toledo-Muragin had three shots while Taboniar and Caitlin Tatemichi (Honolulu/Roosevelt) had two each.

Lane made five stops for Chaminade while Joel had six.

The Silverswords return to the Saint Louis Field pitch Tuesday when they face Concordia Irvine. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
