BELMONT, Calif. – Oh so close, yet so far.
The Chaminade University women's soccer team had victory ripped away as Notre Dame de Namur stunned the Silverswords in a 3-2 come-from-behind overtime win Sunday at Koret Field.
The Argonauts scored three answered goals including the game-winner with just 26 seconds left in the first overtime.
It was the second straight season that NDNU stole a win away from Chaminade. Last year in Honolulu, the 'Swords led 3-2 before the Argos tied it in the 81st minute which ultimately ended in a 3-3 draw.
This time around, NDNU came back from being down 2-0 to complete a stunning comeback.
The loss dropped the Silverswords to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the Pacific West Conference. Notre Dame de Namur improved to 2-8 and 1-3.
Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i-Manoa/Pearl City HS) opened the scoring with her team-leading third goal of the season coming at the 4:36 mark.
Sharon Cain (Honolulu/Kamehameha-Kapalama) was credited with the assist.
The 'Swords made it 2-0 just four minutes later at 8:57 when Cain scored on a free kick from
Tehani Smith (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) following an NDNU foul.
The goals by Fontes and Cain were the fourth- and seventh-fastest in program history. Fontes also has the sixth-fastest (6:20) goal coming earlier this year against Hawai'i Pacific.
But NDNU struck back with goals in the 60th and the equalizer in the 76th minute. Then with just seconds left in the first overtime, the Argos got a through-ball into the Chaminade side where Reilly Paterson fired a shot from the left side of the goal which snuck in for the winner.
Brandee Lane (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) made six saves while her counterpart Alexis Aguilar had five.
Chaminade attempted seven shots, all on-goal led by two each from Fontes and Cain.
Nicole Nishiki (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) and
Jordan Taboniar (Anahola, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) also took SOGs while playing all 100 minutes.
The Silverswords return to the Saint Louis Field pitch on Saturday when they face Biola at 2:30 p.m.
