Volleyball Celebrates Record 22nd Win

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team continued their record-setting run Friday.

The latest one to fall was the program's 22-year-old single-season wins record after its 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-12 win over Fresno Pacific at McCabe Gym.

The victory gave the Silverswords their 22nd win which broke the previous mark set in 1996, before many of the current team members were even born.

Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College/Calvin Christian) put down a career-high 18 kills while hitting .615 on the night, upping the 'Swords overall record to 22-5. Bell also tied her season-high with six total blocks.

Chaminade is also 16-5 in the Pacific West Conference and trail Hawai'i Hilo by one game after the Vulcans survived a five-set marathon at Hawai'i Pacific University on Friday.

Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) added 12 kills, followed by Alana Handy (Burlington, Wash./Bethune-Cookman Univ./Burlington-Edison) with 11 and Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) with 10. Terezie Cernosek (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) put down five.

Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) dished out 31 assists while Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) added 21.

Handy also had 12 digs to collect her 13th double-double this season. Nina Torio (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) picked up 11.

The Sunbirds (7-23 overall, 6-15 PacWest) were led by Caroline Bodziak's nine kills.

Chaminade got off to a rather sluggish start with FPU grabbing a 21-20 first set lead before the 'Swords ran off the final five points to go up 1-0.

After dropping the second set and with the Sunbirds going toe-to-toe in the third, the 'Swords finally stepped on the gas, using a 9-2 run to turn a 16-14 score into a 25-17 winner, hitting .414 in the set while limiting Fresno Pacific to a .000 percentage.

Chaminade finally played like its normal self in the fourth, using surges of 8-1 and 6-0 to end the night. The Silverswords hit .428 (28-4-56) in the final two sets and held FPU to -.016 (16-17-62) during the same stretch.

The 'Swords ended up hitting .287 for the match and held the Sunbirds to .078. Chaminade, which is also ranked sixth nationally in kills, dominated with 57 successful attacks to Fresno Pacific's 37 while the 'Swords who are also ranked ninth in the country in assists, dished out a whopping 56 to FPU's 35.

The Silverswords will end the regular season Saturday against UH Hilo in a match that has major postseason ramifications. The Vulcans (21-6, 17-4 PacWest), who are unranked in the latest West Region rankings, are vying for one of the eight spots. Chaminade, which beat UH Hilo on the Big Island in October and is ranked seventh, is likely playoff bound with a win. However, a loss would put those hopes in jeopardy.

The match is also the final home games for seniors Curry, Bell, Cernosek and junior Kiana Drumheller (Auburn, Wash./Auburn Riverside) who will graduate in the spring and forgo her final year of athletic eligibility.
