Men’s Hoops Downs Alaska Anchorage

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's basketball team made it a clean sweep of the PacWest/GNAC Challenge after dispatching Alaska Anchorage, 71-62, Saturday at McCabe Gymnasium.

The Silverswords, combined with their win over the University of Alaska on Friday, were the only team to finish with an unblemished 2-0 record.

Erik Scheive (Marysville, Calif./Yuba College/Marysville) hit for a team-high 19 points to lead three Silverswords in double-digits.

Grant Dressler (Las Vegas/Sacramento State/Palo Verde) added 14 points while Nicholas Anderson (Anaheim, Calif./Fullerton College/Canyon HS) and Telly Davenport (Idaho Falls, Idaho/College of Southern Idaho/Bonneville HS) each had 10. Scheive, Dressler and Davenport each pulled down six rebounds while Dressler dished out four assists. Anderson completed his afternoon with five rebounds, three steals and a block.

Tyler Brimhall had a game-high 23 points and 11 boards for the Seawolves who suffered their first loss of the season in falling to 3-1.

Chaminade has won six straight in the Challenge which is in its fourth year and also involves Hawai'i Pacific University and Alaska.

Chaminade scored the game's first nine points before the Seawolves came back to close the margin. The 'Swords were never quite able to build a sizable lead and in the second half, UAA managed to go ahead, taking a 61-58 lead with just under four minutes left.

Anderson buried a triple from the top of the key to square the game at 61 then Dressler and Davenport each hit layups on consecutive possessions to put the 'Swords up by four. Anderson then applied the dagger, hitting another 3-pointer with 1:11 remaining which completed the game's key 10-0 run which put them ahead 68-61.

After struggling in the first half from the floor, Chaminade hit 14 of its 24 shots (58.3 percent) in the second half while holding Alaska Anchorage to just 11 of 26 in the final 20 minutes. The 'Swords made 17-of-27 from the foul line while the Seawolves were 10 of 19.

Scheive and Dressler were named to the all-tournament team while Most Outstanding Player honors went to HPU's Jonathan Janssen, the PacWest Preseason Player of the Year.

The Silverswords return to action next Saturday against Oakland City at McCabe Gymnasium with tipoff at 1 p.m.
