Softball Splits Two, Readies for PacWest

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team concluded their four-game series against the University of British Columbia with a split in their second and last doubleheader Friday at Kaiser High School Field.

The Thunderbirds broke out the bats, pounding out 18 hits in their 14-6, six-inning win in the opener. The Silverswords came back to win the nightcap, 2-0, behind freshman hurler Madelyn Stockslager (Torrance, Calif./South) who not only pitched a two-hit complete-game shutout but drove in both runs.

The 'Swords won the series by taking three of four to improve to 3-4 on the season as they next enter Pacific West Conference action. UBC is 1-3.

Game 1
The T-Birds plated two unearned runs in the first but the 'Swords got the runs back in the bottom of the frame with Kayla Henmi (Torrance, Calif./South) scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI sacrifice fly by Kayla Russell (Honolulu/Kaiser).

UBC scored three runs to go up 5-2, but in the third Chaminade got two runs back when the T-Birds catcher tried to double-up batter Kiana Ulufale (Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell) at first but the throw sailed into right field, allowing Ashlyn Yagin (Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell) and Rainelle Matsuoka (Honolulu/Kaiser) to both score.

The T-Birds broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five times to take a 10-4 lead but Ulufale delivered a two-run single to bring Chaminade within striking range at 10-6.

British Columbia, however, slammed the door shut in the fifth by taking advantage of a two-out error to plate four more runs.

The 'Swords, who got only one hit in Game 2 on Wednesday, were held to just three in the opener. Devan Dickson (Avondale, Ariz./Westview) suffered the loss to fall to 1-2.

UBC's Zoe Gillis got the complete-game win while Frances Ramsey had three hits and drove in four.

Game 2
Chaminade struck first when Stockslager lifted a fly ball that dropped down the right field line. The UBC second baseman and right fielder collided with the ball rolling past them into foul territory. That allowed Henmi to cross the plate as well as Matsuoka who scampered all the way from first for a two-run double.

Stockslager then took over inside the circle. She allowed just one base runner to get to second while the infield behind her turned three double-plays including inning-ending twin-killings in the second and fourth innings.

UBC began the seventh with a lead-off walk but a 4-6-3 double-play erased the base runner. Stockslager struck out pinch-hitter Taylore Jones for her fifth strikeout which ended the game.

Henmi got two of Chaminade's six hits and also swiped her fourth bag of the season. Matsuoka, Dickson and Makena Kealoha (Corona, Calif./Norco) accounted for the other hits.

Stockslager's gem evened her record to 2-2 while lowering her ERA to 5.42.

Emma Tuson fell to 0-1 in taking the loss.

Chaminade opens PacWest action Monday when they host conference newcomer Biola in a four-game series at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park. Live streaming audio coverage will be on GoSwords.com.
