’Swords Win Exhibition Opener

HONOLULU – Fans got to see a preview of the 2018 Chaminade University women's volleyball team Saturday at McCabe Gym. The Silverswords did not disappoint, defeating Menlo College in an exhibition match, 25-15, 27-25, 24-26, 25-21.

Preseason All-Pacific West Conference selection Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) and newcomer Alana Handy (Burlington, Wash./Bethune-Cookman Univ./Burlington-Edison) each recorded double-doubles on the afternoon. Tecklenburg had 18 kills and 19 digs while Handy contributed with 11 kills and 13 digs. Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit), who split time as an attacker and libero last season, started at outsider hitter and nearly became the third 'Sword with a double-double with nine kills and 16 digs.

Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) added 11 kills with three blocks while Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College/Calvin Christian) put down nine kills in hitting .643 and had three blocks. Nina Torio (Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani) totaled 13 digs on the day while Terezie Cernosek (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) added six kills and three blocks.

Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) and Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had 30 and 26 assists, respectively.

The Oaks were led by Sofia Salim's 13 kills.

After taking the first two sets, the 'Swords nearly pulled out an improbable comeback in the third, erasing a 24-18 deficit, staving off six set-points before Menlo pulled it out to force an extra set.

In the fourth, Chaminade went on an 8-3 run to help pull away in the final set.

The 'Swords hit .245 to Menlo's .079 and amassed 67 kills to the Oaks' 36. They also out-dug them, 77-57 and tallied 63 assists while Menlo had 34.

The Silverswords open the regular season next Thursday in the First Hawaiian Bank Volleyball Challenge on the Big Island to face Saint Martin's and Simon Fraser.
