Volleyball Sweeps in Season Opener

HILO, Hawai'i – Under the threat of Hurricane Lane, the Chaminade University women's volleyball team made the most of the torrential rain with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 win over Simon Fraser in the Thursday's opening match of the First Hawaiian Bank Volleyball Challenge at the University of Hawai'i Hilo Gymnasium.
 
Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) put down a match-high 15 kills as the Silverswords won their regular-season opener for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
 
Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College/Calvin Christian HS) added nine kills while hitting .438 on the night. Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) had three blocks along with seven kills while newcomer Alana Handy (Burlington, Wash./Bethune-Cookman Univ./Burlington-Edison) contributed with seven kills and 10 digs.
 
Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) had 12 digs with Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) dishing out 18 assists. Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had 15 assists.
 
Chaminade outhit SFU .217-.130 while amassing 45 kills to the Clans' 32.
 
The 'Swords rallied back from a pair of four-point deficits in the first two sets including an 18-14 hole in the second. Bell accounted for three points in the set-ending 11-4 run with two block assists and two kills.
 
Chaminade faces Saint Martin's in the second day of the Challenge Friday at 2:30 p.m.
