Remainder of VB Cancelled in Hilo

HILO, Hawai'i – The final two matches for the Chaminade University women's volleyball team of the First Hawaiian Bank Volleyball Challenge has been cancelled.

After a series of rescheduled matches that saw all but one match on the Thursday slate scrubbed, in the end, the torrential rain from now-Tropical Storm Lane won out.

The Big Island received a substantial amount of rain, in some areas up to 34 inches during a 48-hour period ending late Friday morning. At Hilo Airport, Lane dropped nearly 20 inches there in the same time span. Hawai'i County was under a series weather warnings and experienced a slew of flooding and road closures since Thursday.

Despite the havoc, tournament officials at host University of Hawai'i Hilo still managed to get half the scheduled matches in. All seven squads (Chaminade, UH Hilo, Hawai'i Pacific, Simon Fraser, Saint Martin's, UC San Diego and St. Cloud State) each played two matches. The Silverswords were to have faced St. Cloud State and UCSD on Saturday. They upended Simon Fraser and Saint Martin's for a 2-0 start to the season.

The 'Swords will still meet UCSD next Thursday at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase in Fresno, Calif.
