HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team opened the Pacific West Conference slate Thursday with a 2-0 loss to Azusa Pacific at Saint Louis Field.
The Cougars stunned the Silverswords with their only goals in the game's first nine minutes, both courtesy of Ella Romero.
However the 'Swords were able to play steady the rest of the way despite not being able to find the back of the net.
Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i/Pearl City HS) and
Cierra Toledo-Muragin (Hilo, Hawai'i/Waiakea) each attempted three shots.
Brianna Hernandez (Islip Terrace, N.Y./Iona College/East Islip) returned from injury to take two pair of shots, one on-goal.
Caitlin Tatemichi (Honolulu/Roosevelt) had one shot at the goal.
Brandee Lane (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) made six saves for the 'Swords who fell to 1-2 and 0-1 in the PacWest.
Despite facing a 2-0 deficit, the 'Swords managed to right the ship and play much steadier as the match progressed.
The Cougars improved to 1-4 and 1-0 in the conference.
The 'Sword are next in action Saturday against Hawai'i Hilo at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
