HONOLULU – It's not a win. But it's not a loss either.
The Chaminade University and University of Hawai'i Hilo women's soccer teams duked it out on the Saint Louis Field pitch Saturday but neither were able to get the upper hand after 110 minutes of play in the nil-nil draw.
It is the first scoreless tie for the Silverswords since an Oct. 2014 match at Notre Dame de Namur.
Chaminade goalkeeper
Brandee Lane (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) recorded her second clean sheet of the season. It was also her sixth career shutout, moving her past
Lauren Ishii (2012-15) as the program's all-time leader in the category with whom Lane shared with entering the match.
Chaminade is 1-2-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in the Pacific West Conference while UH Hilo is 1-1-2 and 0-0-1 in the conference. Both teams receive one point in the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge standings.
The Vulcans took seven first-half shots. One was by UHH's Carlie Reader who fired a shot towards the goal but CUH defender
Dayna Nishimura (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) was there to send the shot back towards the field and away from the net.
Chaminade had a chance four minutes into the second half when
Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i-Manoa/Pearl City) went one-on-one with UH Hilo keeper Bailey Cahill along the left hash. Cahill abandoned the net and Fontes managed to touch the ball past the Vulcans keeper. The ball then did an agonizingly slow roll towards the empty goal before a Hilo defender managed to clear the ball just inches before breaking the plane of the goal line.
Both squads still had several chances as the match progressed. In the second overtime, Fontes fired a shot that was saved by Cahill while
Brianna Hernandez (Islip Terrance, N.Y./Iona College/East Islip HS) launched a shot that sailed over the goal.
Then with less than a minute left, Jaimie Salas nearly gave the Vulcans the golden goal but her shot from the right angle dribbled several feet wide left of the target.
UH Hilo attempted 18 shots to Chaminade's eight. Lane had six saves while Cahill recorded three.
Along with Lane,
Nicole Nishiki (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani),
Tehani Smith (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) and
Kirstin Wong (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) played all 110 minutes.
The Silversword and Vulcans will meet again next Saturday, this time on the Kamehameha-Hawai'i School campus. The match is a non-conference tilt and will not count in the PacWest standings.
