’Swords Return Home, Sweeps Holy Names

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team returned home and got back on the winning track Saturday with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 win over Holy Names at McCabe Gym.

Alana Handy (Burlington, Wash./Bethune-Cookman Univ./Burlington-Edison) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with match-highs of 16 kills and 14 digs to help the Silverswords snap their two-match losing streak.

The 'Swords improved to 11-3 overall and 5-3 in the Pacific West Conference while the Hawks fell to 3-12 and 2-7. It's Chaminade's sixth consecutive win in the series, five via three-set sweeps.

Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) hit .346 while adding 12 kills while Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College/Calvin Christian) put down 11 kills with a .476 attack percentage. Handy was also extremely efficient, hitting .389 on the afternoon.

Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) added eight kills and three total blocks.

Chaminade's dual setting tandem of Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) and Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) combined for 41 of the team's 48 assists. Curry also had two of the 'Swords' four service aces.

Terezie Cernosek (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) had a match-best four total blocks, two solo, while Nina Torio (Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani) had 13 digs.

Sierra Allen led Holy Names with nine kills.

Although the 'Swords had control for most of the match, Holy Names did have moments and rallied from several sizable deficits in the first two sets.

But in the third set the Hawks managed six five-point leads, the last coming at 19-14. Bell and Handy then accounted for all five points to square the set at 19. But HNU retook the lead and eventually threatened to extend the match with a 23-21 advantage. But Tecklenburg helped to account for the next three points with two kills and a block with Cernosek to set up match point. Cernosek then rejected Fanny Chow's attack at aloha ball.

Chaminade out-hit Holy Names .290 to .157 and tallied 54 kills to HNU's 30. The Hawks did manage to keep pace in the digs column with 44 to the Silverswords' 51.

The 'Swords return to action Monday when they face Academy of Art at McCabe Gym. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
