SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's basketball team got back on the winning track Saturday with an 84-54 win over Dominican University of California at the Conlon Center.
Grant Dressler (Las Vegas/Sacramento State/Palo Verde HS) had a career-high 24 points for the 12th-ranked Silverswords who snapped a two-game losing streak in improving to 11-2 overall and 5-2 in the Pacific West Conference.
Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) contributed with 17 points and
Erik Scheive (Marysville, Calif./Yuba College/Marysville HS) had 21 while
Jake Hutchings (Las Vegas/Howard College/Centennial HS) came off the bench to add 11.
The Penguins (6-8, 2-6 PacWest) were led by Jordan Williams' 15 points.
Cartaino also pulled down eight rebounds with Scheive getting seven.
Nicholas Anderson (Anaheim, Calif./Fullerton College/Canyon HS) had five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Chaminade's Big 3 (Dressler, Cartaino, Scheive) were a combined 20 of 31 from the floor with Dressler burying a career-high six 3-pointers.
The Silverswords led for all but 44 seconds of the game with the game being tied at 8 during that duration. Chaminade led by as many as 19 late in the first half but Dominican's 12-4 run helped to close the gap to 11 with four minutes left before Dressler's two free throws helped the 'Swords to a 39-26 halftime lead.
The Penguins cut further into the deficit and trailed by just seven (47-40) six minutes into the second half. Chaminade managed to get the lead back into double digits then broke the game open with a 17-0 surge during a five-minute span late in the game. Cartaino had six points during the run while Dressler and
Andre Arissol (Northampton, England/Otero JC/Charnwood HS) each hit triples.
The 'Swords shot 50 percent from the floor (30 of 60) with 10 3-pointers and held the Penguins to just 29.8 (17 of 57). They also owned the glass, 44-32, and had 14 assists with 14 turnovers. Dominican dished out 10 assists and 15 turnovers.
The Silverswords will play the fourth game of their five-game road trip Tuesday at Holy Names.
