HONOLULU – The last time the Chaminade University women's soccer team faced off against Hawai'i Pacific University, they rallied from a two-goal deficit to salvage a draw against their in-city rivals last month.
In the rematch, which counted in the Pacific West Conference standings, however, the Sharks scored three consecutive goals en-route to a 3-2 win over the Silverswords Saturday at Saint Louis Field.
The loss dropped the 'Swords to 1-2-2 overall and 1-1 in the PacWest. The Sharks improved to 5-3-1 and 2-1 in the conference.
Chaminade opened the scoring in the 16th minute when a flurry of shots by
Cailla Fabro (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Idaho State/Pearl City HS) and
Camryn Cabudol (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) were deflected by Sharks goalkeeper Marissa Froio. However Frorio could not stop a third when
Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i-Manoa/Pearl City HS) was in the right place, booting the ball through for the game's opening score.
It was Fontes' third goal of the season while the freshman Cabudol got her first assist of her career. Fabro also got a historic assist, the fifth of her career, breaking the program's career assist record which she shared with
Twyla Hamasaki and
Shannon Wright.
But HPU had an answer in the form of Ebony Madrid who scored in the tying goal in the 22nd minute and the go-ahead score in the 50th minute, her conference-leading 10th of the year. The Sharks added an insurance goal by Brittny Ihara 10 minutes later.
However Chaminade came right back in the 74th minute when
Kirstin Wong (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) lofted a free kick from 35 yards out which entered the plane of the goal just under the cross bar to bring the 'Swords to within a score and the second goal of Wong's career.
But HPU shored up its defense, allowing just one corner kick and one shot in the final 16 minutes.
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) made four saves while Froio had three.
Both squads attempted nine shots while the Sharks had seven on goal to the 'Swords five which were on target.
The Silverswords are back on the Saint Louis Field pitch Monday against Fresno Pacific. Kickoff is slated for 10 a.m.
