’Swords Fall to Sunbirds in Defensive Struggle

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team couldn't get the break it needed Monday, falling to Fresno Pacific 1-0 at Saint Louis Field.

A free kick by the Sunbirds' Rachel Anderson in the 27th minute proved to be the game's lone goal. Anderson's boot came 25 yards out, a low-liner that got through the Silverswords' defensive line and snuck into the lower left corner.

Kirstin Wong (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) nearly had an answer five minutes later. Like Anderson, the senior defender had a free kick albeit from 27 yards away with an angle towards the top of the box. However Wong's free kick glanced off the crossbar which kept the 'Swords off the board.

Chaminade, which fell to 1-3-2 overall and 1-2 in the Pacific West Conference, had several looks in the second half on shots by Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i-Manoa/Pearl City HS) and Asya Holt (Honolulu/Roosevelt) with no success. Wong also had an opportunity with two minutes left but her shot sailed above the crossbar.

Fontes lead the Silverswords in shots attempted with four. Holt and Wong had two each.

Goalkeeper Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) made three saves while her counterpart from Fresno Pacific (1-6-2, 1-0-2 PacWest) Hannah Hathaway made two stops.

A physical game from first whistle, it saw a total of six yellow cards and two ejections. Chaminade was assessed four yellow cautions after not accumulating any through its first five games this season and just eight all of last season combined. FPU was shown four cautions which gives it eight this season, third-most in the conference.

The Silverswords are back in action Saturday when they host Dominican. Kickoff at the Saint Louis pitch is set for noon.
