HONOLULU – One would think luck would find the way of the Chaminade University women's soccer team sooner or later.
It's turning out that it might be the latter.
The Silverswords battled visiting Dominican to 0-0 draw Saturday at Saint Louis Field. The draw is the third for them this season, setting a program record for most ties in a season.
For Chaminade (1-3-3 overall, 1-2-1 Pacific West Conference), the tie marks a curious oddity seven games into the season in which all four decisions have been decided by one goal with Saturday's tie being their second scoreless contest this season.
But if the Silverswords' situation can be deemed a curious oddity, then Dominican's situation would be outright bizarre. The Penguins now have six ties on the season (3-3-6 overall and 0-2-3 in the PacWest). All six of their draws have ended in nil-nil counts, breaking the NCAA Division II record for most 0-0 ties in a season. The previous mark was five by South Dakota State in 2003 and West Virginia Wesleyan last year. The Division II record for most ties in a season is nine set in 2009 by Chico State.
Cailla Fabro (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Idaho State/Pearl City HS) led the 'Swords with four shots taken while
Kirstin Wong (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) had both her shot attempts on goal.
Kira Nishiki (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) also had a shot on goal.
Meanwhile Wong made her 28th consecutive start without requiring a breather, extending her consecutive minutes streak to 2,693.
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) had five saves in facing 11 shots, recording her second clean sheet this season.
No one on Dominican's side attempted more than two shots. DUC keeper Alyssa Ramos made three saves on 13 shots faced.
Both teams attempted eight first half shots with Chaminade taking five in the second half while Dominican was held to three. The 'Swords came close to hitting pay dirt in the 64th minute but a shot from
Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i-Manoa/Pearl City HS) caromed off the left post.
And to complete the strange day, neither team was able to even get off a shot in both overtime sessions.
The game marked the end of seven straight games on O'ahu for the 'Swords including six straight at home. They will next take to the pitch on Oct. 26 when they open their only mainland road trip this season at Concordia Irvine.
