WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – Amid rainy conditions, the Chaminade University women's tennis team opened the 2019 season Friday with a loss to Linfield College at the Jarand M.Y. Iwase Tennis Complex.
The match was delayed by nearly three hours but the Silverswords couldn't overcome the Wildcats, ranked 25th in the ITA Division III rankings and fourth in the D-III West Region.
With new Division II scoring rules dictating that doubles count as one point instead of three in the past and points going to six instead of eight, Linfield earned the 7-0 win.
The Wildcats took all three doubles to earn the point.
In No. 1 singles,
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) won her first set, 6-3, against Riley Clayeux but couldn't hang on to the lead, dropping the next two sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku) managed to score points in her match against Mililani native Alysse Nakasato in the No. 2 spot while
Cai Yan Fang (Zhongshan, China/McKinley) also took points in both sets against Sarah Sweet in No. 4 singles.
No. 3 singles saw
Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) drop straight sets to another Mililani product, Haley Fujimori.
Tomomi Kohno (Tokyo, Japan/McKinley) played her first singles match in two years, falling to Michelle Ly.
And in No. 6 singles,
Caitlin Tatemichi (Honolulu/Roosevelt) made her collegiate tennis singles debut against Jesse Vezo. Tatemichi is Chaminade soccer's all-time leading scorer in points and goals.
Chaminade is 0-1 to start the season while Linfield is 2-1.
The Silverswords will take the next two weeks off and will next be in action at the Holua Invitational in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island starting Feb. 16. They will face Hawai'i Hilo twice then wrap the invitational against Holy Names.
