HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team is in the win column for the first time this season, defeating Mills College, 7-0, Saturday at the Ala Moana Tennis Courts.
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku) picked up their first career wins in both singles and doubles action. Also getting their first career wins were
Angelica Almilla (Laguna, Philippines/Farrington) and
Caitlin Tatemichi (Honolulu/Roosevelt).
The Silverswords (1-5) won their first match in 15 tries dating back to March 2017 while the Cyclones fell to 0-4.
Liner and
Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) opened the day with a quick 6-0 win in No. 1 doubles followed by
Tomomi Kohno (Tokyo, Japan) and Tatemichi who also scored a 6-0 win in No. 3 doubles. Te'i and
Cai Yan Fang (Zhongshan, China) finished doubles with a 6-2 in the No. 2 position to give the doubles point to the 'Swords.
In singles action, Kohno was the first to wrap up her match in No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win followed by Shirai with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Grace Deaton in No. 3 singles to give Chaminde three wins. The Silverswords claimed the overall match victory when Liner defeated Ashley Tesmer 6-0, 6-4 in No. 1 singles.
Victories by Fang (No. 4 singles), Te'i (No. 2) and Almilla (No. 6) completed the win.
The Silverswords and Cyclones face each other again on Sunday at Ala Moana Tennis Courts beginning at 3 p.m.
