HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team was victorious again on Sunday, defeating Mills College, 7-0, at Ala Moana Tennis Courts.
The victory was the Silverswords' second straight, the team's first consecutive wins since the 'Swords won four straight to start the 2012 season.
Chaminade (2-5) began the match with the duo of
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kahuku) and
Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) winning their match in No. 1 doubles followed by the No. 2 combination of
Cai Yan Fang (Zhongshan, China) and
Caitlin Tatemichi (Honolulu/Roosevelt).
Nicole Nishiki (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) and
Kirstin Wong (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel), both standouts for the Chaminade soccer team and making their tennis debuts, were victorious in No. 3 doubles to give the Silverswords a sweep of their doubles matches.
In singles, Shirai made quick work in the No. 3 spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Grace Deaton while
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) defeated Ashley Tesmer 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1. Fang's 6-1, 6-2 win over Deja Nicholas in No. 4 singles ensured the match win for Chaminade.
Tomomi Kohno (Tokyo, Japan) and Te'i also won their singles matches as did
Angelica Almilla (Laguna, Philippines).
The Cyclones fell to 0-5 on the season.
The Silverswords return to action Monday when they face The College of Idaho at Ala Moana Tennis Courts. Doubles matches start at 12 p.m. with singles to follow.
