Women’s Hoops Downed by Point Loma

HONOLULU – Played its fourth game in seven days, the Chaminade University women's basketball team faced off against one of the Pacific West Conference elites.

The Silverswords managed to hold their own against Point Loma on Wednesday but it wasn't enough in their 87-65 loss at McCabe Gymnasium.

Destiny Castro (Talofofo, Guam/Notre Dame HS) was her usual self with 22 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals but Michaella Dean (Irvine, Calif./Orange Lutheran) had a career night. The sophomore guard had a career-high 13 points while tying her career best with five assists. She also pulled down seven boards.

Chaminade fell to 2-12 overall and 2-6 in the Pacific West Conference.

Haylee Saurette led the Sea Lions (10-4, 6-2 PacWest) with 24 points and also had 10 rebounds.

Breann Nueku (Honolulu/Clark College/Kamehameha-Kapalama HS) contributed with 11 points for the 'Swords while Cheyenne Ardona (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) had eight points and Arianna Blowe (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) seven.

The 'Swords shot reasonably well against an opponent they have historically struggled with from the floor, shooting 41.1 percent (23-of-56) on Wednesday. In their last four meetings against the Sea Lions, Chaminade shot less than 39 percent from the field.

Chaminade also committed just 11 turnovers although they were outrebounded 49-23.

The 'Swords held their own in the opening minutes of the first quarter, trailing just 14-12. But a 16-2 Point Loma run during a six-minute run spanning the first and second periods would give the Sea Lions a double-digit lead they never relinquished.

The Silverswords, who have played every other day since Jan. 2, will get two days off before they return to the McCabe Gym floor on Saturday against Notre Dame de Namur. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
