SAN DIEGO – The Chaminade University women's basketball team dropped the second game of their southern California road trip Monday with a 75-42 loss at Point Loma.
Destiny Castro (Talofofo, Guam/Notre Dame HS) led the Silverswords with 21 points and fell shy of her fourth double-double of the season with by one rebound. She also had two steals, two blocks and an assist.
In the loss, however, the senior guard continued to climb the list of all-time leading scorers in the history of NCAA basketball in the state of Hawai'i. Castro moved past former University of Hawai'i forward Kamilah Jackson to fourth in career scoring with 1,553 points. She joins an impressive list of players – all from the Division I Rainbow Wahine – in the top four including Judy Mosely, Nani Cockett and Raylene Howard.
Chaminade fell to 4-19 on the year and 4-13 in the Pacific West Conference.
Ellyonna Bankofier (Happy Valley, Ore./Clackamas) contributed with 10 points for the 'Swords. Chaminade had just three others in the scoring column with
Michaella Dean (Irvine, Calif./Orange Lutheran) with five points,
Arianna Blowe (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) with four and
Cheyenne Ardona (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) with two.
Blowe pulled down eight rebounds while Dean had seven boards and three assists.
The Sea Lions were paced by Cara Liggins' 21 points and improved to 14-8 and 10-6 in the PacWest.
Much like she did on Saturday at Azusa Pacific, Castro kept the 'Swords in the game, accounting for six of their 11 first quarter points to trail 15-11.
But Point Loma outscored Chaminade 12-4 to start the second quarter then ended it with another run of 7-0 to put them up 40-21 at halftime.
Both teams scored just 11 third-quarter points but a 16-2 run early in the fourth by the Sea Lions did in the 'Swords.
Chaminade was held to just 14-of-59 shooting for 23.7 percent while Point Loma was 30-of-69 for 43.5 percent. The 'Swords were just 4-of-23 from 3-point range while PLNU 10-of-32 and were out-boarded 47-40.
The Silverswords will remain on the road before resuming action Thursday at Biola.
