’Swords’ No. 1 Doubles Gains Upset in Opener

WAIMEA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team opened the 2020 season with 7-0 loss Friday to Dallas Baptist at the Fairmont Orchid Tennis Center.

The Silverswords (0-1) dropped two of three doubles matches that gave the Patriots (9-1) the doubles point. DBU, ranked No. 7 in the South Central Regional rankings, then took all six singles matches to complete the win.

However the 'Swords' lone victory of the day came in No. 1 doubles when the team of Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and freshman Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) downed the Patriots' duo of Kate Daugherty and Taylor Leslie, 7-6, winning their match on a 7-5 tiebreaker after a 6-6 deadlock.

Daugherty and Leslie, the South Central Region's No. 5-ranked doubles team, saw their perfect 8-0 season come to an end, giving Chaminade its first significant victory in a doubles match since Ty Aki took over as head coach in 2014.

The 'Swords' No. 2 doubles squad of Cai Yan Fang (Zhongshan, China/McKinley) and Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) dropped a 6-2 decision to Adriana Carpenter and Ashton Wilfong. The No. 3 squad of Tomomi Kohno (Tokyo, Japan/McKinely) and Mariel Navarro (Manila, Phillipines/McKinley) fell 6-0 to Devon Austin-Canning and Leslie Omeire.

In singles competition, Daugherty, the 22nd-ranked singles player in Division II and No. 2 in the South Central Region, defeated Liner 6-1, 6-4, while Leslie, ranked 11th in the region, defeated Lau 6-0, 6-1, in the latter's first-ever collegiate singles match at No. 2 singles.

In the other singles matches, Carpenter defeated Fang 6-1, 6-1 (No. 3 singles), Genie Hernandez topped Shirai, 6-1, 6-1 (No. 4), Wilfong beat Kohno 6-0, 6-0 (No. 5) and Ira Vogelmann defeated Navarro 6-0, 6-0 (No. 6).

The Silverswords return to action Saturday when they face fellow Pacific West Conference member Stanislaus State. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
