HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team was back in action Sunday, facing fellow Pacific West Conference member Dominican University of California at the Don Andrew Diamond Head Tennis Center.
Although the Silverswords dropped the match, 6-1,
Kayleen Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) won her first career singles match, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5, over Ofelia Lopez Camarena in the No. 2 spot.
In the final set, Lau and Lopez Camarena were tied at 5 before the freshman won the final two games to take the set and the match.
The 'Swords were also highly competitive in their other matches.

Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) in No. 1 doubles and
Cai Yan Fang (Zhongshan, China/McKinley) and
Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) in No. 2 doubles lost 6-3 decisions.
In singles, Shirai won her first set, 6-3, against Haley Garcia in the No. 4 spot but could not hang on as Garcia won the next two sets. In the No. 5 singles position,
Tomomi Kohno (Tokyo, Japan/McKinley) nearly defeated Antoinette Schreiber in the first set, 6-4, before falling in the second.
Liner was competitive in No. 1 singles while
Mariel Navarro (Manila, Phillipines/McKinley) did the same at No. 6.
The Silverswords are 0-5 on the season while the Penguins improved to 5-3.
The 'Swords are next in action Monday when they face the University of Hawai'i Hilo at the DHTC starting at 12:30 p.m. The Vulcans won the first meeting in Waimea on the Big Island.
