HONOLULU – For the second consecutive day, the Chaminade University women's basketball team came out on the short end in the season-opening series against the University of Hawai'i Hilo.
The Silverswords were outscored 17-3 in the third quarter as the Vulcans prevailed 57-38 for the second straight day on Sunday at McCabe Gymnasium.
Jordyn Zader (Mukwonago, Wis./Pius XI) led the 'Swords with 12 points, one shy off her career high. Freshmen
Sasha Phillip (Punalu'u, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Baptist) and
Emily Laham (Potwin, Kan./Maize) added 10 for Chaminade (0-2). Phillip also pulled down six boards as did fellow freshman
Emma Morris (Tuscon, Ariz./Tanque Verde) and
Carsen Bridges (Groveland, Fla./Leesburg).
Arianna Blowe (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) was held scoreless but gathered in a team-high nine boards while rejecting three Vulcans shots.
Jenna Waki and Mandi Kawaha led UH Hilo (2-3 overall, 2-2 Pacific West Conference) with 13 points each.
Laham's bucket with 43 seconds left in the first half would be the only one by the 'Swords for the next 11 minutes. Laham ended the drought by connecting on an old-fashion three-point play 44 seconds into the fourth quarter. However UH Hilo had already opened up a 20-point lead at that vantage point.
Chaminade put up a whopping 29 3-point tries but made only three. Overall, the 'Swords went just 11-of-50 from the field for 22.0 percent. UH Hilo was 22-of-68 from the floor for 32.4 percent and outrebounded Chaminade, 46-37.
The Silverswords will have nine days to prepare for Hawai'i Pacific University, the third-ranked team in Division II, on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at The Shark Tank. It is a makeup of the postponed contest that was originally scheduled back on Jan. 22. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
